Project Description –
Mosques of today are inward looking. Boundary walls and opaque envelopes not only serve as physical barriers to entry, the lack of transparency also prevents the public from understanding what goes on inside mentally. An ongoing stigmatization of Muslims and their culture in certain parts of the world, we feel, is partly due to this gap in knowledge.
We believe the next generation of mosques should bridge this lack of understanding by promoting religious openness. Al Islah Mosque explores the notion of how a mosque can be open yet maintain its sanctity. This openness is extended beyond the formal manifestation of visual porosity, accessibility and climatic openness, to the embracing of the wider community.
